The Collins/Wardingham Project: Interactive (2006)

This is one CD I think a lot of people probably wouldn't be aware of and especially if your a fan of prog-fusion you are missing out on some great music. I picked up a copy a while ago and was thinking that our readers here at Sea Of Tranquility should really be aware of it as it really is that good. If Planet X and On The Virg are your thing this is sure to impress. Like Virgil Donati, Grant Collins, who is also Australian, is an accomplished drummer whose high level of independence and skill behind the drums has to be seen to be believed. On this release he has teamed up with Paul Wardingham who handles both guitar and keyboard duties like a true master. There is a complex mix of prog-fusion on Interactive with touches of jazz and world music. There are also quite a lot of heavier moments on here like the tracks "Attack Of The Necromongers" and "Bionic Zit Xpander"... what cool song titles! I love the one of many impressive moments on this CD when Grant plays along at the 6.18 minute mark virtually soloing over the top on the opening and title track "Interactive". Though we all hear many albums where musicians are highly skilled at their craft, but it's so complex the songs gets lost so what's the point?. That isn't the case here on Interactive and there is plenty of diversity and surprises to hold you attention while being amazed at Grant and Paul's ability. Planet X finally has has some competition with the Collins/Wardingham Project. - Scott Jessup
Tracklist:
01. Interactive

Ivan Lins: Saudades de Casa (2007)

This is Ivan Lins at his best. Every track makes me ache, cry, and smile. What wonderful music and melodic vocals! (I don't understand a word of Portuguese and it really does not matter at all.) This is music that is accentuated by lyrics and you can really FEEL what is going on. I wholeheartedly recommend this CD. It is great the first time you hear it. It is 20x better the 10th time you hear it. I'm at the 50th-60th listening and it only gets better and better. I love it. -- Amazon.com

Eric Le Lann - Al Foster - David Kikoski - Doug Weiss (2009)

Eric Le Lann started his career as a professional trumpeter at the age of 20. He won the Grand Prix at La Defence in 1979, the Django Reinhardt prize in 1983, and the Critics’ Grand Prix for Best Theatre Music in 2001. He has recorded 15 albums under his own name so far, with people like Mike Stern, Martial Solal, Archie Shepp, Eddie Gomez, Mino Cinelu, Al Foster… He has played with Chet Baker, Herbie Hancock, Billy Hart, but also Dexter Gordon in Bertrand Tavernier’s « Autour de Minuit » (« Round Midnight »). He has played with his various bands in about sixty countries and two documentaries are devoted to him.
This new album by Eric Le Lann has been recorded in October 2008 in Systems Two Studio, NYC. He is accompanied in this adventure by 3 major American artists, David Kikoski, Doug Weiss And Al Foster.
This album has been produced like a recorded live performance: the 4 musicians met and discovered each other while playing, exploring the whole of the repertoire (Eric Le Lann’s compositions and a few standards), with a maximum of 2 takes per track to keep the music as improvised and inspired as possible. A genuine lesson of Jazz.

[By Request] Dreaming in Colour: The Dream Merchant (2012)

With a hip cutting edge vibe that may well blow you away, contemporary, instrumental jazz group Dreaming In Colour has just released its debut CD, ‘The Dream Merchant’. Constructed around the band’s core members of Kevin Ellis, Chris Noonan and Joe Calandrino, the line-up has often, over the years, been complemented by some of the genre’s top artists and this is particularly so with ‘The Dream Merchant’ for which Ellis, Noonan and Calandrino are joined by Jeff Lorber, Eric Marienthal and Nelson Rangell.
In fact Lorber features on all ten tracks with Marienthal contributing to seven of them. He is in stupendously high-octane form for the fusion filled ‘Crosswinds’ and later the free flowing, sax driven ‘Waiting In Texas’ serves as another opportunity for his playing to really sizzle. The interplay between Calandrino on guitar and Lorber on keys is a focal point of the retro tinged ‘Chromatic’ while ‘Keepsakes’ proves to be a jazzy yet velvety number where the combined talents of Ellis, Noonan, Calandrino, Lorber and Marienthal are found to be at their impeccable best.
‘Davy’s Byrne’ is another lively foot stomper where the lead is generously shared amongst the combined gathering. Notable here is Lorber on keys and he again cuts sensationally loose on ‘Percolator’ which has a groove reminiscent of that often generated by his own band The Jeff Lorber Fusion.
Calandrino takes center stage for the ultra catchy ‘No More Goodbyes’ and although the commercially appealing ‘Twilight Drive’ is the product of a three-way collaboration between Lorber, Kevin Ellis on bass and Marienthal on alto, when the tune is reprised as a sub two-minute closer, Marienthal’s switch to soprano takes away none of the magic.
Despite ‘The Dream Merchant’ being a CD where the tempo remains relatively high throughout, ‘Yearbook’ provides a delicious contrast that adds to the richness of the entire collection. Also relaxed in style, and arguably the best track on the album, is the title song where Smooth Jazz Therapy favorite Nelson Rangell is wonderful on soprano sax.
It is one reason of many why you should make ‘The Dream Merchant’ part of your listening pleasure.

Jack Lee: Asianergy (2006)

Jack Lee is Korea’s most recognized world class Jazz musician, and has been at the vanguard of promoting Jazz in his hometown of Seoul, Korea, as well as in the Asian territory through his performances and recordings with many of the top name in Jazz today for almost twenty years.
With roots planted firmly in his Asian heritage, technique and sensitivity honed by his schooling and experience in New York, and with a singular voice propelled by an intense desire for a more complete artistic expression, Jack Lee combines formidable technique with a penchant for gentle, flowing lyricism that makes his music eminently appealing to both musicians and non-musicians alike.
Born in Seoul Korea, Jack absorbed the sounds of rock guitar heroes such as Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, and Jeff Beck before discovering the jazzier sounds of Pat Metheny, Larry Coryell, and Miles Davis. At 17, he traveled to the United States to pursue his passion and later enrolled as a computer science major at Columbia University. A stint as a disc jockey at the well-known station WKCR-FM exposed him to an extraordinary breadth of jazz music. Being a student in New York allowed him to experience first hand the living legends of jazz in the city’s renowned clubs, and also enabled him to study first-hand with such guitar luminaries as Larry Coryell, Emily Remler, Bill Connors, and John Scofield.
Becoming a professional musician after graduation, Jack has performed and toured all over the world with many top names in Jazz, and started making his mark in NY jazz scene, as the formidable Asian musician/ producer.
Currently Jack is involved as a producer/ guitarist on several noteworthy projects, which sets him apart from a conventional jazz musician.
On his project with the exciting new world music ensemble Asianergy, Jack summons up some of his most heartfelt, emotionally moving playing on record to date. Spurred on by an international cast of sidemen; Academy award winning Pianist Dave Grusin, Grammy winning pianist, Bob James, Bassist, Nathan East and a grammy winning drummer, Harvey Mason to record as well as another good friend , very talented multi instrumentalist, Norihito Sumitomo, a master of EWI (electric wind instrument) from Japan, under-rated percussionist from India-Malaysia, Lewis Pragasam and a great acoustic guitarist/composer from Brazil, Toninho Horta, and another great pianist from New York, Mr.Charles Blenzig.
At the core of this superb recording is the chemistry between Lee and kindred spirit Pragasam, whose powerfully polyrhythmic approach to hand percussion and the drum kit fuels the momentum of these sessions.

Mason Brothers: Two Sides, One Story (2011)

After spending 20 years performing under the leadership of others, British brothers Brad and Elliot Mason step out front, taking charge of an all-star band that redefines the trumpet-trombone front line of drummer Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers of the '50s and '60s. The round and mellow combination of Brad Mason's trumpet with Elliot Mason's trombone sounds almost like the early Crusaders.
With pianist David Kikoski, bassist Scott Colley, drummer Antonio Sanchez, and saxophonist Chris Potter joining the brothers, there is a lot of firepower to lives up to its billing.
The title of "Stage Pints" is an anagram of John Coltrane's "Giant Steps," Elliot Mason's resulting rearrangement beginning with the familiar tune played in reverse over the original bass line, reharmonized and performed alternately in 3/4 and 4/4 time. Both Masons give angular, if frenetic solos, Elliot's blowing out the top of the song. Potter exerts his muscular tone over the piece's well-worn and complex harmony of the piece, bringing the original's importance—and this re-imagining—into proper focus. When this piece hits 4/4, it takes off with a burn.

1. 24/7 9:30

Marcus Miller: Renaissance (2012)

An album entitled Renaissance is long overdue for the widely acclaimed Renaissance Man Marcus Miller. In among the most enviable careers in music, Miller is a two-time Grammy-winner and the composer/producer of ten critically acclaimed and genre-defying albums (seven studio and three live). Even the most devoted follower may be astonished to realise that Renaissance is only his eighth studio project since his 1983 debut, Suddenly, considering the abundance of occasions Miller's name has appeared within album credits and that he has dazzled with performances, compositions and productions in the company of some of the world s most respected and accomplished players and superstars - from the mid-'70s to the present. As a multi-instrumentalist, Marcus is highly proficient as a keyboardist, clarinetist/bass clarinetist and, primarily, as a world-renowned electric bassist, topping critics' and readers' polls for three decades. His resume as an A-list player brims with over 500 recording credits as a sideman on albums across the spectrum of musical styles: rock (Donald Fagen and Eric Clapton), Jazz (George Benson, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Sample, Wayne Shorter and Grover Washington, Jr.), pop (Roberta Flack, Paul Simon and Mariah Carey), R&B (Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan), hip hop (Jay-Z and Snoop Dogg), blues (Z.Z. Hill), new wave (Billy Idol), smooth jazz (Al Jarreau and Dave Koz) and opera (collaborations with tenor Kenn Hicks and soprano Kathleen Battle). As a film music pro, Miller rose from writing the go-go party classic 'Da Butt' for Spike Lee's 'School Daze' to becoming the go-to composer for 20+ films (from the documentary 1 Love to the animated children's fable The Trumpet and The Swan to the Eddie Murphy/Halle Berry classic Boomerang ). As a producer, writer and player, he was the last primary collaborator of jazz legend Miles Davis, contributing the composition and album 'Tutu' to the canon of contemporary jazz music. The breadth of his collaborative talents were best showcased in his work with the late, great soul man Luther Vandross, contributing to well over half of his albums as a producer, composer and/or player on a string of hits capped by 'Power of Love/Love Power' for which Marcus won his first Grammy, 1991's R&B Song of the Year. And starting with David Sanborn's 1980 album Hideaway and its follow-up Voyeur (for which the alto sax giant won a Grammy performing Marcus' composition 'All I Need is You', Marcus not only left an indelible mark on Sanborn's distinctive sound, he laid the often-copied blueprint for the coolest of contemporary jazz sounds. Style, soul and intense professionalism have set Marcus Miller at the top of his game for three decades now. Marcus was born in 1959 and raised in a musical family that includes his father, William Miller (a church organist and choir director) and jazz pianist Wynton Kelly. By 13, Marcus was proficient on clarinet, piano and bass guitar, and already writing songs. Two years later he was working regularly in New York City, eventually playing bass and writing music for jazz flutist Bobbi Humphrey and keyboardist Lonnie Liston Smith. Miller soon became a top call session musician, gracing well over 500 albums, recording with musicians and in countries around the globe - from Frank Sinatra and Elton John to Bill Withers and LL Cool J. After two R&B-leaning solo albums for Warner Bros. in the '80s followed by co-leading The Jamaica Boys (with drummer Lenny White and singer Mark Stevens), Marcus took a hiatus then returned rejuvenated with the galvanizing The Sun Don't Lie (1993) and Tales (1995), both of which found him brilliantly connecting the dots of Black music's evolution. Following the fan-demanded Live and More in 1997, Miller released M2 ('M-Squared') on his own 3 Deuces Records label. -- Amazon.co.uk

Richard Manetti: Why Note (2012)

Why Note, is unquestionably a nice find! French guitarist Richard Manetti serves up a delicious blend of contemporary and modern jazz with his latest offering. Like many of you, this is certainly my first encounter with Manetti’s music.
Surprised, absolutely because after listening his consummate tonality flows evenly through the core of these admirable pieces with immense yet colorful melodies align neatly to frame creative and attractive story-lines as brilliantly executed by the guitarist on the opening track “Why Note.”
Initially I found the ensemble’s symmetry faultless, to compliment their interplay Manetti plays effortlessly on “Braz-Tang.” His impeccable touch matches perfectly to his inventive penmanship, his voice soars extensively on “Camden Town” this jewel rocks. The variety is welcomed on these eleven gorgeous compositions, the lush tones “Toninho” is saturated with the intimate side of his voicing. Why Note, is immaculate in tone and execution. You’ll find this repertoire of songs seasoned with engaging arrangements, therefore offering you an inviting listening experience. (Rob Young)

Bob Mintzer Big Band: The Art of the Big Band (1991)

Some Bob Mintzer fans may disagree with me but even though the Big Band ensemble here includes superb sidemen, an excellent technical recording/sound quality and an interesting rendition of Glenn Miller's "Moonlight Serenade" as well as some other very fine moments throughout especially on the festive "Brazilian Affair", the great Big Band workout on "Christopher Columbus", the smooth "Easy Living" and the jumpin' title track, the overall CD lacks a touch of adventure making the overall feel a bit stiffer with "safer" material than you would want to hear in order to make 1991's "The Art Of The Big Band" worthy of a "classic" 5-Star rating. 1988's "Spectrum", is 5-Star Mintzer Big Band at its best from top to bottom. That is more like it with a bit more adventure to spice it up to substantiate continued enjoyable interest even more over and over. Still however, "The Art Of The Big Band" is absolutely worth having in your collection.

With this line-up mostly composed of the musicians from the elite Jazz Department of Frederic Chopin Music School we recorded our second demo.
The name of the band is a play on words “Jazz” and “Res Publica” (pl – Rzeczpospolita). We are also known as the eighty-eight fingered demon, Lord of the Strings, Pres of Jazzpospolita and Metaboss. We play music which is rather difficult to describe with Myspace categories. We suggest drum’n’jazz, dumbient and polished jazz but they don’t explain what it’s all about. Anyway, despite the name and its associations with mainstream jazz we are trying to stray from pure jazz.

EOL Trio: End of Line (2012)

Even though all the compositions of this second album were written by the pianist and keyboard player Denis Girard, Eol Trio sounds truly like a trio – not like a composer playing with his sidemen. The 66.66% left of this extraordinary trio is made of Laurent David (playing the bass guitar) and Xavier Girard on drums. We may define their music as “progressive jazz rock”. We can name influences such as the E.S.T , Medeski & Wood, Emerson Lake & Palmer… But we can also take the time to enjoy the tunes, the amazing beat, the intimate atmosphere, the smart improvisation and the sounds (of the bass guitar and the keyboard). This band isn’t quite from the planet Earth. Far from usual cliches and trends, a new world to discover, if you haven’t already had!

Eddie Gomez: Per Sempre (2012)

Always an impressive technician, Gomez has an identifiably soulful sound—sometimes from the very first plucking of his bass. That has carried him through an impressive array of settings, from traditional trios and fusion-infused amalgams all the way over into the delicate lyricisms of chamber jazz.
Per Sempre fits squarely into the latter category, as Gomez settles into a program marked by sweet grace notes, diaphanous beauty but perhaps not enough variety. Recording in Bologna, Italy, Gomez is joined by saxophonist Marco Pignataro, flautist Matt Marvuglio, pianist Teo Ciavarella and drummer Massimo Manzi.
Of course, Gomez is perhaps best known as a veteran of the last great Bill Evans Trio, a period he revisited recently with the terrific Further Explorations alongside Chick Corea and the late Paul Motian. And there are times when Gomez’s lithe figures and melodic sensitivity here recall those underrated early 1970s Evans recordings for Milestone and Fantasy. More generally, though Ciavarella and Co. don’t aspire to the same sense of rapturous anticipation, so much as a directly stated romanticism. That’s best heard on Ciavarella’s love-stricken “Arianna,” which finds Gomez employing a folky attitude while Marvuglio’s flute adds this stirring sense of endless optimism.
The result is an album of full-bodied, if gently conveyed, emotions—and that in itself can eventually imbue the proceedings with a sameness. You got the sense that Evans’ best thoughts, for instance, were often the ones in between the words. The ideas behind Per Sempre are far more straightforward, like the difference between a wink and a kiss. That makes its successes — and “Arianna” is most certainly one of them — quite memorable, but occasionally lends the rest of the album a translucent lack of contrast.(Something Else)

Fly (Mark Turner, Jeff Ballard, Larry Grenadier): Year of the Snake (2012)

Formed eight years ago by drummer Jeff Ballard with fellow Brad Mehldau partner Larry Grenadier on bass and saxophonist Mark Turner(one of the most resourceful and independent sax newcomers of the last decade), the New York trio Fly is an exchange between equals, not a sax-led charge over a rhythm section. Though it falls into the territory sometimes dubbed "chamber-jazz", Year of the Snake is up there with Fly's best work, with its rustling fast grooves and languid horn lines, and pieces that open on almost impossibly pure high-register long tones. The swaying Salt and Pepper is as coolly jazzy a piece as any diehard could wish for, and a glide over fizzy drumming on the title track turns into a patiently spun improvisation. Grenadier's lovely tone and Ballard's blend of subtle textural playing and whiplash power complete one of the great contemporary jazz small groups.

Steve Kuhn - Steve Swallow - Joey Baron: Wisteria (2012)

The wise and wistful title track of "Wisteria", written by Art Farmer, takes us back to the early 60s, when both Steve Kuhn and Steve Swallow sang softly of the blues in the trumpeter-flugelhornist's band. Swallow was also a member of the trio Kuhn formed shortly thereafter: they've shared a lot of history since then. Steve Swallow played on Kuhn's 1974 classic "Trance" while Kuhn contributed to Swallow's "Home" and "So There" in 1979 and 2005 respectively. Drummer Joey Baron has been heard with Kuhn on ECM discs including "Remembering Tomorrow" (ECM 1553, 1995) and the dazzling tribute disc "Mostly Coltrane" (ECM 2099, 2008).
This new album takes a fresh look at several pieces last heard on record in Kuhn's orchestral "Promises Kept" collection - "Promises Kept" itself, "Adagio", "Morning Dew" and "Pastorale". Kuhn's compositions, few in number but robust and adaptable, have often lent themselves to quite different interpretations. If anything, these small group versions emphasize the emotional core of the material. Counterbalancing the yearning balladry, the album also includes driving, exciting hard bop (on "A Likely Story", for instance, and Swallow's "Good Lookin' Rookie), Carla Bley's gospel-tinged "Permanent Wave", and the Brazilian "Romance" by Dori Caymmi... It's a varied programme which the trio seems to sail through effortlessly, musicians secure in their craft, beyond the need to prove anything, creating the agreeable illusion that this demanding music is playing itself.
Swallow and Kuhn after a half-century of collaborations indeed know each other's playing well; in accord at a very high level, they share the same love of melody, and develop their improvisational ideas together, as is already apparent on the buoyant opening track, Kuhn's "Chalet" where soloist and accompanist roles rotate. The resourceful Joey Baron, one of Jazz's finest drummers, a player with access to the whole tradition, is also thoroughly at home in Kuhn's oeuvre, having worked with the pianist, in diverse settings for more than 20 years. Surprising, then, that the recording of "Wisteria", in New York's Avatar Studio in September 2011, marked the first occasion that Kuhn, Swallow and Baron had ever played in trio together.
As writer Bob Blumenthal noted at the time of "Promises Kept", "Kuhn's touch, which illuminates the subtlest harmonic nuances and allows both shimmering upper-register glissandos and booming bass chords to emerge with pristine clarity and keenly calibrated force has long been one of his defining traits". The famous touch - which Kuhn often credits to early lessons with Margaret Chaloff - is in full bloom on "Wisteria".

Tony Remy: Boof! (1994)

TONY REMY is one of the world's most exciting guitar players of any genre. His hard-edged rhythmically driven approach is enriched with jazz intuition and bluesy soul.
Live on stage, his relentless invention and incredible raw energy can set the crowd on fire. The reputation he has gained within the jazz community worldwide is fast making a legend out of this North London musician.
Tony started his professional music career in 1986, although he was on the Jazz scene earlier. He recalls: "I had a band called "Cube 60" in '84 with Winston Clifford, Joe Bashorun and Nick Cohen. We were crazy about Miles Davis, Weather Report, Steps, The Brecker Brothers, so we were writing and playing that stuff. I also had a rock band called "Secretary Bailey". Then in '85, "Cube 60" developed into "Desperately Seeking Fusion" with Frank Tontoh, Jason Rebello and Julian Crampton. That was really my first outing as bandleader".
Tony released his first solo album "BOOF" in 1993 on the American Jazz/fusion label GRP. Tony's second album "METAMORFOLLOW-G" was released on Alltone Records in 1997. Tony's playing draws on many different guitar styles. Pete Mills feat. Tony Monaco: Fresh Spin (2007)

Tenor saxophonist Pete Mills doesn't chart new musical frontiers on this 2007 release. On the contrary, he just gets it done the good old fashion way via lots of gusto, oomph and up-tempo grooves, performed with his estimable band-mates. Mills regenerates the jazz organ combo vibe here, complete with soul/funk, swing and meaty underpinnings provided by the rock solid and fluidly moving rhythmic unit.
With Hammond B-3 ace Tony Monaco and guitarist Pete McCann onboard, the musical climate here is loaded with zestful motifs amid the soloists alternating exchanges. On "Eddie, Monaco embarks upon a vengeful tear by slamming his organ into overdrive. And in other spots, the musicians comp, dart and weaver around each other's often-torrid dialogues that tend to project a multi-layered and harmonious group-centric vibe.
"Crooked Cheese is a quirky funk romp, where Mills' edgy sax lines nicely contrast Monaco's silvery chord progressions. Nonetheless, the musicians mix it all up rather vibrantly. No doubt, a good time was had by all. And check out Mills' warmly penetrating choruses on the quiet duet with McCann on Billy Strayhorn's "A Flower is a Lovesome Thing.
In sum, the ensemble merges the best of many conceivable worlds. Chops-heavy, yet compositionally sound and focused, the artists' jovial camaraderie transcends the norm. Brimming with the essence of good cheer, Mills and crew communicate a distinct sense of musical merriment during the entirety of this impacting and irrefutably entertaining jaunt.

Ronnie Earl: Language of the Soul (1994)

Language of the Soul is a wonderful change of pace for guitarist Ronnie Earl. The record is the first all-instrumental album Earl has recorded and, if anything, it's even more successful than his full-fledged, band-oriented records. Working without vocals has given him the freedom to try all sorts of new things, whether it's the jazzy interludes of "Indigo Burrell" or the gospel-flavored "I Am With You." Earl's compositions aren't memorable in and of themselves (he wrote all but two of the cuts), yet they give him the opportunity to play freely. He comes up with some truly remarkable solo passages, offering definitive proof that he's one of the best contemporary blues guitarists of the '90s. © Thom Owens, All Music Guide

The Derek Trucks Band: Soul Serenade (2003)

It would be wrong to pigeonhole Derek Trucks as a southern rocker despite his ongoing day gig as the Allman Brothers Band's second guitarist. On his fourth solo album (actually recorded before his third, 2002's Joyful Noise) the young slinger shows what he's made of, and it's not barbeque and bourbon. Instead Trucks caters more to the martini crowd, giving a sophisticated cast to his slide guitar, snaking it into elegant musical conversations with a rather frivolous flute, and some off time drumming that are reminiscent of the clean jazz fusion that Traffic used to conjure up. On the opening track, "Soul Serenade"/"Rasta Man Chant," Trucks inserts some of the languid licks and flirts with Miles Davis before devolving into Bob Marley. "Bock to Bock" is a more structured affair that recalls Henry Mancini. Gregg Allman sits in on "Drown in My Own Tears" and spits out the bitter words in his grizzled voice while Truck follows along in a perfect slow dance, punctuating each of the singer's phrases with his own mournful slide. Trucks ventures south of the border in "Afro Romp" and the band evokes the great jazz drummer Elvin Jones on "Elvin." - amazon.com

MSM Schmidt: Arrivals (2003)

"If you don't like it, then tell us what you'd like to have changed" (an annoying remark of one of my fellow musicians sometime during the 80s).
At that time, I played drums in a band and had no clue of compositions. I was a frustrated, self-taught drummer, never had any lessons, simply playing along in two bands without knowing, how to influence the music I was supposed to be playing.
Helge Mruck was playing keyboards in one of these bands, and sure enough it was Helge, with whom I went about buying my first keyboard, the Roland D50 and who taught me the first steps. With his help, I started to learn an instrument that enabled me to express my musical ideas. During the long years of our friendship, we created an innumerable numbers of songs ... The numbers of keyboards grew, computers and samples were added. Together (with the help of the legendary Atari ST) we composed many songs and founded our own band: Walkin' on Ice. With this band, we also recorded a CD: "Finally". Our music at that time was already very fusion-oriented . I still played drums in our band, but slowly but surely composing became my passion. When Helge moved to England, the band fell apart.
Composing, free from commercial purposes and constraints, is my hobby since. But I always felt that the songs I composed were too fast and too furious for anybody to listen to, not to mention musicians playing them. However, when playing them to friends, their reactions were surprisingly positive. (Which shows: My friends are all very polite.) - - MSM Schmidt.

Brand X: Livestock (1977)

This CD is so good it is unbelievable. If you play an instrument, you need this CD. The way these guys play changed the course of my musical life. These guys made me realize that there is a higher plane of musicianship that doesn't get ANY airplay. Brand X is an acquired taste. Too complex and busy for the faint-hearted. Each player is a monster. Most people have no idea how good Phil Collins is on drums. This CD is a clinic for any players out there, no matter what instrument you play. All the BrandX stuff is like this, but this live album is special. You won't believe its live, and you won't believe how unknown it is once you've expierienced it. Guaranteed

Sam Most & Joe Farrell: Flute Talk (1979)

Essentially a blowing session, the flutes of Sam Most and Joe Farrell are in the forefront of this enjoyable straightahead date. Pianist Mike Wofford, bassist Bob Magnusson, drummer Roy McCurdy and percussionist Jerry Steinholtz are quite supportive of the flutes. Most and Farrell play a few standards (including a creative version of "When You Wish upon a Star"), some straightforward originals and on "Leaves" they freely improvise around each other in an interesting (if overly brief) duet.

Gary Hoey: Utopia (2010)

There are guitar players and then there is Gary Hoey. Unless you travel in circles with guys named Hendrix, Vai, Satriani, Yngwie and Van Halen, then you may not know much about Gary. Unless you have the skills of these aforementioned guitar heroes then you are not in the same league as Gary. Perhaps he is the best guitarist not to have found international stardom. Not that he is unknown. Just ask any guitar player who Gary Hoey is and the first thing they will do is shake their head in disbelieve. Yeah, Gary is that good.
Hoey has returned with a new solo album that mixes instrumentals with hard, melodic rock songs. Each tune contains incredible six-string calisthenics, whether Gary sings or not. His singing, on a side note, has greatly improved. This album sees Hoey singing so naturally and fluid that soon reviewers will quit even mentioning his vocals, as they will begin to take them for granted.
Missing is a famous remake like Gary has so often done in the past but that is a good thing as he no longer needs gimmicks to prove himself. “Walk Away” is a powerful statement that would be on the radio if released by a band with members who were half his age. “Reminds Me of You” and “If I Knew Then” are both melodic rock masterpieces. For the guitar purists out there, rest assured there is plenty of stuff for you as well. Gary shuts up and plays his guitar on “Utopia,” “Bonzai Island” and “Big Cactus” satisfying even then biggest guitar solo nerd around.
Tracklist:
1 Utopia - Gary Hoey 3:31
2 Walk Away - Gary Hoey - 3:05
3 Reminds Me of You - Gary Hoey 3:42
4 Inevitable - Gary Hoey 3:13
5 Something's Going On - Gary Hoey 4:42
6 Only Human - Gary Hoey 3:41
7 You're Killing Me - Gary Hoey 3:40
8 Barn Burner - Gary Hoey 3:15
9 If I Knew Then - Gary Hoey 4:43
10 Simplify - Gary Hoey 4:22
11 Big Cactus - Gary Hoey 3:18
12 Bonzai Island - Gary Hoey 2:35

Hiram Gomez: Hold Down The Groove (2010)

I am a Mexico City born bassist, composer and musical arranger.
At age of seven I started playing bass with private tutors.
At 17, I began my work as a session musician (recordings) which consequently gave way to my carrer as a professional bass player.
I have played with more than 70 singers, among those: Vicky Carr, Ricky Martin, Luis Miguel, Maria Conchita Alonso, Willie Colon, Pablo Milanes and many others of international status. I have travelled the world with them and participated in many of their album productions.
In the jazz scene, I shared the stage with musical talents such as: Billy Cobham, Paquito De Rivera, Giovanni Hidalgo, Akira Jimbo, Simmon Phillips, Eugenio Toussaint, Fernando Tousaint etc. I also participated in the production of more than 300 CD’s and jingles.
I also have performed on the most prominent stages around the world like: Madison Square Garden NY NY, MGM Las Vegas Nevada, Radio City Music Hall NY, Memorial Theatre Sao Paulo Brasil, Auditorio Nacional Mexico, International Forum Tokyo Japon, Hollywood Bowl Los Angeles California, the Metropolitan Theatre Manila Phllippinas Etc.
For the past 20 years I have also been engaged in providing electric bass and general music lessons.
In 1990 I successfully completed the course of Jazz Modern Harmony, an essential component of music creation.
In 1999 I decided to venture into a solo carrier which epitomized my real passion: jazz fusion. However, on occasion I still participate in various musical productions as a session bass player.
